The Process

Wood Selection

Dovetail Drawers Waiting Assembly

The first step in the process of commissioning a fine woodworking project, such as a piece of furniture or cabinetry, usually involves a visit to our shop. The general design and function of the piece are discussed at this time, as well as the selection of materials to be used. A hand drawn sketch of the basic layout of the piece is then created. If the project involves fitted cabinetry (built-in cabinetry), the initial visit may take place at the client’s home.

Once a basic design is agreed upon, we present an estimated price. At it’s approval, a deposit of 10% will be required. We then proceed with conceptual drawings and material samples. A contract document is created. When the approval of the drawings and contract is signed, initial payment will be due.

During the construction process, we strongly encourage you to visit our woodworking shop to ensure the project is meeting your expectations.

Upon completion of construction, and prior to the application of the finish, we will ask you to inspect the piece at the shop once again. Once it meets your approval, the piece will be completely disassembled and the finishing process will begin. Achieving a beautiful finish is a painstaking process. As a result, finishing can sometimes take as much time as the construction itself.

When finishing is complete, we will ask you to inspect the piece one more time prior to delivery. Shop visits greatly reduce the chance of miscommunication or disappointment. At your final approval, a second payment is due.
